Coming Soon...Snowflake Bentley

When we get back from winter break, we will be reading this wonderful book written by Jacqueline Briggs Martin and illustrated by Mary Azarian. Azarian won the 1999 Caldecott Medal for the illustrations. It's a multigenre book describing the life of Wilson Bentley, the first known photographer of the snowflake.

Snow Prognostications

Emily, Nate, Kelsey, and Zack predicted that the St Louis area would receive at least two inches of snow on/close to December 11th! Way to go!

Captain Underpants!

After reading a book during the month of November, the students at Rose Acres got to vote for a book character they wanted Mr. Vargo to become. Captain Underpants won! 4C had the chance to pose with a celebrity!

Reading Poetry to Help Fluency

Here are the students of 4C reading their poems together.

According to much research, repeated reading of poetry increases students' oral fluency. I reviewed Karen Newsome's research while incorporating poetry in the classroom. Newsome found that "repeated reading of poetry was both a beneficial and practical instructional activity. Students made improvements in both oral fluency and comprehension during the study."
